Strawberry Fields 2019 - Deep Jungle Stage
A collaboration between ground and sky, irregular cubic forms rise and fall throughout the entire environment. A space created for Strawberry Fields festival 2019 which encapsulated a sculptural stage, 4 standing platforms and a unique shading structure which pushed the boundaries of what has been done before.
A collaboration with Tetrik Structures director, Aidan Beyer who designed and installed the shade fabric, the space created a fun and explorational environment for the guests over the 4 day event.
Asymmetry is found in every element of this design, the stage composed of 5 increasing cubic volumes each twisting and falling on the next in increasing angular distortion and variety. The opening of the stage mouth skews off-center, challenging traditional staging norms and ensuring the focus is not always on the artist themselves, but the environment which surrounds them.
The entirety of the stage was constructed from discarded formply, sourced from a large scale concreting warehouse. These preloved panels lend the structure it’s unique surface texture, upon which the remnants of cleaned concrete could still be seen.
Within each hanging cube, a large LED blinder was hung, allowing the ceiling squares to be lit independently and simultaneously with each of the cubes on the ground.
Encasing the central communion area are 4 irregular viewing platforms. Each are composed of two equal cubic shapes which are sinking simultaneously into the ground and into each other. Their quirky nature instills a strange sense of discovery as one ascends inside their raised walls.
Exploring the space reveals new angles and composure’s not fully realised from a front on perspective.
